Aches

In the middle of last week I got an email from my friend Kerry asking if I fancied going for a walk on Sunday. I said yes, so yesterday I got up early (in Sunday terms), got the bus from London Bridge to Friern Barnet (Muswell Hill is rather attractive), and then we drove out to Aylesbury. The walk is six miles along a side-branch of the Grand Union Canal; when this canal started operating in 1815, the price of coal in Aylesbury halved overnight. We walked to the Grand Union proper, which is in a town that just happens to have several pubs, so we had a good pub lunch and then walked the six miles back.

Very pleasant, though by the time we got to the car I felt I could not walk another step. My feet are fine today, but my muscles seize up if left too long in one place. I must walk more regularly (it doesn't have to be 12 miles), especially since, over lunch, I persuaded Kerry to do a 100 km hike with me in Chile in October 2006. We'd talked about it before but this time I had the map with me and everything, and now it's definite. Kerry's girlfriend A doesn't know it's definite, but I'm sure it's exactly how she would want to spend her 2006 holiday.

I used to live in (High) Barnet, ages ago,and it was surprisingly countryish, in parts. Lovely walks to pubs, etc. I wonder if it's still like that? (Haven't been there in many years).
Hiking in Chile! Yow!

Kerry lives in Friern Barnet, in a huge and very handsome converted lunatic asylum (I normally use the term "psychiatric hospital", but when the institution was built in 1845, I think you just have to call it what the founders would have called it). The grounds are very countryish, but outside them I'm afraid it just feels like "North Circular Territory" - at least from what I've seen in my two brief visits. There had evidently been a lot of building, even just since my A-Z had been published.

Hiking in Chile! Yow!

This is a follow-on to a part of my travels that I haven't posted about yet - but that should be in the next instalment.

Nothing like a good alcoholic lunch to persuade you that you can deal with the walk back - especially a nice, easy, level walk (I take it canals are much like disused railways in this respect?)!

They've converted Friern Barnet? Good Lord - end of an era!

And indeed, I look forward to hearing about the hiking in Chile: I can find wine tours in Chile and walking tours, but nothing, alas, that combines the two...

They are indeed. It was a ridiculously easy walk in that respect - it was just that there was quite a lot of it.

I am looking into hiring a porter to carry our wine for us. [And I'm not entirely sure if I'm joking there or not.]

Not sure if that was 'said' with a straight face or not, but it made me smile.

Good for you on the walking!

Not said entirely with a straight face, though Kerry and A did meet while on hiking holidays in New Zealand, so it's not a cruel joke to talk about us making the decision for her. Kerry and A are both considerably fitter than I am, so I really need to get in shape if I'm going to avoid embarrassing myself!

In which case a ramble in Durham, where we have both flat bits (disused railways) and hilly bits (eg the Pennine Way) is well overdue.

Take that as an invitation.

Thank you! It has been a long time. Do you have any rambles planned over the next few months?
